DOUBLE FOR KOVACS AS WESTBURY FIGHT BACK
Almondsbury 2-2 Westbury United

Westbury are now unbeaten in five matches after this action-packed draw which was played at Cadbury Heath's ground. On a sunny but windy afternoon, the home side took an early two goal lead before Dan Kovacs netted two fine strikes to ensure the points were shared. Jordan Cooper and Ashley Knight were constant threats for the Almonds, while there was a good deal of controversy as both teams were denied stonewall penalties!
United actually went close several times in the opening minutes with Wayne Wheeler seeing one effort blocked by John Mitchell and a curler turned wide by goalkeeper Jason Lewis, Nick Ridout hit a fierce free kick that deflected off the defensive wall and over the bar.
Cooper threatened until Pete Ayton's well timed tackle denied him a shot at goal, but Westbury were their own worst enemies as two awful errors in the space of two minutes gifted their hosts the two goal lead. Firstly, on 10 minutes, Cooper set up Simon McIlroy whose chip into the box was handled by Dan Dominy and a penalty awarded : Mark Stoneham scored confidently from the spot. Then straight from the restart Dominy passed the ball back to Nick Evans who inexplicably picked it up and an indirect free kick resulted : McIlroy rolled the ball to Stoneham who blasted in his second from the edge of the box.
A scrappy period of play allowed Westbury's frustrations to surface but they found a route back into the game on 25 : a direct ball by Sayeed Ibrahim sent Kovacs racing towards goal and, one on one with Lewis, he lobbed home from 20 yards to make it 2-1.
Somehow Westbury were denied a spot kick of their own on 29 : Wheeler struck a 20 yard free kick that was handled by a player in the defensive wall whose hands were above his head! More frustration followed which led to a few yellow cards and Westbury's players were further aggrieved at the referee's decisions when Luke Smith's strike also appeared to strike a hand.
Knight had a skilful effort saved by Evans, but Westbury would have drawn level before the break had Lewis not denied Luke Smith at point blank range.
The second half was no less eventful and Kovacs drew his side level on 51 : a kick by Evans was allowed to bounce by the Almonds' defence and Kovacs was able to take his time and pick his spot into Lewis' bottom left hand corner. Almondsbury were all over the place for a few minutes with Kovacs, Wheeler and Tarick Yachou all seeing efforts blocked in the box.
Gradually the home side began to threaten again and they felt rightly hard done by on 67 : McIlroy went past Ibrahim who brought him down inside the box but much to everyone's surprise no penalty was given! Cooper and Knight tried their best for their side : Cooper's pace carried him clear but a low cross was put behind by Ridout, McIlroy's resulting corner was headed goalwards by Knight with Evans making a save. Cooper's pace then took him into the box again where Evans denied him with a low save.
Both sides could have nicked it at the end : substitute Matt Mead having an 18 yarder saved by Lewis and Knight fizzing a shot wide from just outside the box.

STAR MEN - Jordan Cooper (Almondsbury) & Dan Kovacs (Westbury United)
TEAM - Nick Evans, Sayeed Ibrahim, Luke Smith, Pete Ayton, Nick Ridout, Dan Dominy,
Ashley Groves, Matty Smith, Dan Kovacs, Wayne Wheeler, Tarick Yachou

WONDERFUL WESTBURY IN FIVE GOAL SHOWING
Gillingham Town 1-5 Westbury United

This was Paul Brickley's Westbury United side at their very best as they swept aside their hosts with pacy, attacking football that showed what could have been possible this season had consistency been in place throughout. Left winger Nathan Hallett was the star player, but the whole team played their part and they would have had a clean sheet but for a poor decision by a referee's assistant. When Hallett channels his aggression positively he is a dangerous prospect to opposition defences and a fine tackler when defending. Bobby Mitchell returned to the starting line up after injury and partnered Ashley Groves in an energetic midfield.
United were dominant from the off and scored their first on 5 minutes : Pete Ayton's throw in found Hallett who raced to the byline and fizzed in a teasing cross that was met by Matty Smith's finish at the back post. A series of free kicks and corners went unrewarded and it was another brilliant move which saw the lead doubled on 11 : Wayne Wheeler and Hallett played a one-two on the left before Hallett fed the ball back to Wheeler who struck the ball low to Darren Wakeley's left hand side.
Gillingham slowly found their feet but the closest they came was when Jason Manley twice headed off target from Adam Fricker set pieces, from the second of these Nick Evans launched a counter attack and Wakeley left his box to try and clear but sliced the ball before just beating Hallett to it in a race back towards his goal!
In another break, Dan Cox took the ball off Jason Manley's head when he was better placed to meet Ben Thompson's cross. Town reduced their arrears on 34 but there should have been an offisde flag : Fricker's strike was parried by Evans into the path of Cox who tapped it in and the goal was given despite him having been ahead of all the other players.
The second half started with Gillingham trying to level the score but the closest they came was when Nick Thomson fed Joe Smeeton who struck the ball over the bar.
Westbury were playing superbly and good play by Wheeler and Dan Kovacs set up Hallett whose fierce effort flew narrowly wide. Nick Ridout made it 1-3 on 53 when, after he had a header cleared off the line by George Mapletoft, the ball broke to Hallett and his touch set up Ridout for a fine finish. The next goal came just five minutes later : Luke Smith, captaining the side very well, lofted the ball forward and Wheeler raced forward before playing it to Matty Smith who notched his second of the night.
Matty Smith tried for a hattrick soon after but his volley was deflected wide and, in a rare home attack, Luke Smith denied Adrian Foster a shot before Smeeton hit a half chance off target.
The final goal came on 86 : substitute Tarick Yachou worked to retrieve the ball on the right wing and played an accurate ball beyond the home defence to Wheeler who broke clear to finish confidently. There was almost a final nail in Gillingham's coffin when Matt Mead came off the bench to blast an angled shot against the crossbar.

*STAR MAN - Nathan Hallett (Westbury United)
TEAM - Nick Evans, Sayeed Ibrahim, Luke Smith, Pete Ayton, Nick Ridout, Bobby Mitchell,
Ashley Groves, Matty Smith, Dan Kovacs, Wayne Wheeler, Nathan Hallett

EVANS AND RIDOUT STAR IN DERBY VICTORY
Westbury United 1-0 Bradford Town

An excellent all-round team performance, with goalkeeper Nick Evans and defender/goalscorer Nick Ridout the outstanding players, led Westbury United to victory as they extended their unbeaten run to seven matches against promotion chasing Bradford Town.
Bradford had won 2-0 in the return fixture back in September, but on this occasion they found Westbury's defence (including Evans) in top form and it was Ridout who scored the only goal with a header midway through the first half.
The visitors threatened first when Booker Woodford went forward but an offside flag, the first of many against his team, denied an opening. Shortly afterwards top scorer Matt Minnis' pace carried him into the box and he dragged an effort wide.
Nathan Hallett received the ball from Ridout and took a touch before shooting, however former Westbury keeper Lewis Porter saved comfortably. Hallett had to leave the pitch injured after just 12 minutes with Tarick Yachou replacing him.
After a scrappy period of play the goal came on 26 : Ridout stayed forward after a set piece and saw two efforts blocked, with the second going out for a corner. Matty Smith took the flag kick and Ridout ran in unmarked to head the ball into the net.
Yachou and Ashley Groves combined to set up Wayne Wheeler but he struck wide from 20 yards and, having kept their deficit to just one goal, it was Town who came very close to drawing level before the break. Woodford sent Minnis clear and it took a fine Luke Smith tackle to prevent him shooting, then Nick Ross broke on the left and crossed to Woodford who touched the ball on to Minnis and, looking certain to score when inside the six yard box, he saw Evans pull off a superb save!
Wheeler took the ball from Dan Kovacs and hit an angled drive straight at Porter early in the second half, but there was little other action for a long period as offsides stopped Bradford in their tracks as well as the work rate of midfielders Groves & Bobby Mitchell and defenders Sayeed Ibrahim, Ridout, Luke Smith and Lee Morgan to prevent chances being created.
As Town pushed more men forward in search of an equaliser the play became very open : Dave Percival went on a 50 yard run before being tackled by Luke Smith before Matty Smith found himself one on one with Porter with the keeper standing up long enough to make a save.
With time running out a frantic passage of play saw Matty Smith run past Liam Milburn only to be denied again by Porter and, with the ball scrambled away and hit upfield, Minnis got into the box and Evans made a great save before getting up to instinctively parry Steve Roddy's rebound to keep Westbury's lead intact! Another former Westbury player, Jerad O'Pray, who had been quiet all afternoon had the final chance deep into injury time as he volleyed a few feet wide from the edge of the box.

*STAR MEN - Nick Evans & Nick Ridout (Westbury United)

MEAD NETS BUT UNBEATEN RUN ENDS
Shepton Mallet 2-1 Westbury United

Striker Matt Mead socred his first goal of the season for the First Team, but Westbury's seven match unbeaten run came to an end in a physical encounter at Shepton Mallet. Mead was in the team due to Dan Kovacs being absent because of illness. The match was marred by a serious foot injury to Westbury's Luke Smith (the injury was not caused by a bad challenge), which led to a 20 minute delay while an ambulance was called to attend : Westbury's hard working defender was taken to Bath RUH.
After home forward Lucas Ward had set up Greg Dycer for the game's opening chance, which was wasted, Mead notched the opening goal on 10 minutes : excellent work by Ashley Groves and skill by Wayne Wheeler led to the latter playing the ball into the box where Mead arrived to sidefoot into the net.
Wheeler himself went close to making it 0-2 with a 20 yarder that flew wide while Ward came to the fore by forcing Nick Evans into a diving save. Shepton's wingers, Ben Lacey and Ren Turnock, were a constant threat and Lacey's pinpoint cross found Dycer who headed inches wide.
A scrappy period of play with attacks breaking down and defences on top was ended by a great piece of play by Lacey : he broke down the left and fizzed a cross into the danger area where Ward arrived to powerfully head in the equaliser on 42.
Midfield workhorse Bobby Mitchell, whose previous goal came at this Shepton last season, almost repeated the feat on the stroke of half time but Owen Dunn made a good save.
For some reason matches between these two teams have become local-derby-like in their intensity, which should make next Tuesday's (31 March, Meadow Lane, 7.45pm) quick return fixture an interesting one. The second half was a full blooded affair with challenges flying in and several yellow cards shown by the referee.
Turnock set up Francis who struck the ball wide on 47, but ten minutes later there was action at both ends as United went close to regaining their lead before the home side notched what turned out to be the winner : Nathan Hallett worked an opening and his cross found Wheeler who saw Dunn save an overhead kick. The keeper launched a counter attack with Ward forcing Evans into a save but the ball fell kindly for Francis and he finished with ease.
Westbury felt they should have had a penalty on 70 when Mark Pearce was pushed over by Lee Smith when trying to get on the end of Groves' chip into the box, however the referee turned down the appeals and the nearest they came to another goal was when Hallett put the ball wide from a Pete Ayton set piece.
The injury to Luke Smith came with five minutes remaining, forcing Westbury to play the remaining time with ten men because all substitutions had been made. It was Shepton who came closest in that time with Ayton clearing Francis' 20 yarder off the line and Evans saving from Dycer in a one on one situation.

TEAM - Nick Evans, Sayeed Ibrahim, Luke Smith, Bobby Mitchell, Nick Ridout, Lee Morgan,
Ashley Groves, Matty Smith, Matt Mead, Wayne Wheeler, Tarick Yachou
SUBS - Nathan Hallett, Mark Pearce, Pete Ayton (all used)

GREAT GROVES HELPS DENY GREEN
Westbury United 0-0 Longwell Green

An energetic performance by midfielder Ashley Groves, who did a great job on Longwell Green playmaker Neil Rosslee, along with another fine display by goalkeeper Nick Evans paved the way for Westbury holding their promotion chasing visitors to a draw.
In some respects second placed Green only have themselves to blame for not winning as striker Dave Parnell was guilty of several bad misses, however they should also have had a penalty in the first half. And United, who were largely outplayed in the opening period, came to the fore in an exciting second half where both teams could have snatched the points.
Rosslee played the ball through to Parnell early on and, with just Evans to beat, he saw the Westbury keeper make a fine save with his legs. Evans then made a fingertip save to turn Simon Warren's 25 yarder round his right hand post.
There was quite a battle between Groves and Rosslee, the latter being booked for his part in an off the ball incident, and it took until the 25th minute for Westbury's first chance : Wayne Wheeler stretching to make contact in the box but the ball bouncing out of his reach.
Somehow Green failed to take the lead before half time : Parnell broke through and set up Chris Dauncey but Evans saved at point blank range, Parnell again denied by Evans after he'd worked a good opening and after the ball wasn't cleared he conspired to put the ball wide when in acres of space!
The penalty incident came on 35 : again it was Parnell creating the opening and he was brought down inside the box by Lee Morgan, but no spot kick was awarded to the surprise of people from both sides.
As the half drew to a close Nick Ridout tried his luck with a free kick but the ball sailed a yard over the bar, before Sayeed Ibrahim defended well to stop Warren in his tracks.
The second half started in much the same vein with Parnell bursting through but, one on one with Evans, he again dragged the ball wide of the target!
Westbury became much more dangerous from that point on with Wheeler and Nathan Hallett attacking quickly. Groves had an effort deflected over the bar and Hallett struck the ball over after good work by Ibrahim. Wheeler outpaced Ryan Gardiner and, after his cross-shot had been deflected for a corner, Matty Smith's flag kick was scrambled away.
Play flowed from end to end : Longwell's Chris Churchill setting up Ben Pope who fizzed an angled drive inches wide, Wheeler crossing to Dan Kovacs but his header went over the bar and Evans doing well to save when Chris Alway had time and space to shoot. Hallett had the best chances in the closing stages with Mark Britton making his only meaningful save of the day and another strike going wide.

*STAR MEN - Ashley Groves & Nick Evans (Westbury United)

Ashley Groves, Matty Smith, Dan Kovacs, Wayne Wheeler, Nathan Hallett

First Team Remaining Fixtures

COOL KOVACS NETS THREE POINTS FOR WESTBURY
Westbury United 1-0 Shepton Mallet

Dan Kovacs netted his sixth goal for Westbury United as his side gained quick revenge for a defeat at Shepton Mallet just a week earlier. This was a match with plenty of goalscoring chances (22 in total, 13 for Westbury and 9 for Shepton) and Kovacs' first half header was the only one to find the back of the net. Sayeed Ibrahim continued to blossom with an energetic performance at right back. Westbury named an unchanged side from that which drew with Longwell Green (0-0 on Saturday 28 March) while the visitors made two changes to the team which won 2-1 in the return fixture.
Shepton had the first opportunity with Ashley Francis setting up Lucas Ward but he found Nick Evans in fine form, while at the other end Wayne Wheeler had a shot blocked by Gary Banfield and Kovacs struck a left footer wide.
A period of dominance led to two great chances for Shepton : James Parrott beat Westbury's offside trap but managed to put the ball wide when one on one with Evans and Ward threaded a ball through to Greg Dycer but he also missed the target.
The only goal of the match came on 28 minutes : Matty Smith sent in a teasing free kick and Kovacs ran in unchallenged to head powerfully past Owen Dunn in Mallet's goal.
United were now on top and could have doubled their lead before half time : a Smith corner found Ridout but his goalbound blast was blocked. The same pair combined again minutes later as Ridout's quick free kick set up Smith who thrashed a 35 yarder just a foot over the bar. Kovacs' new found confidence came to the fore five minutes before the break when he ran from the halfway line and sent a fierce shot just wide. Another chance led to Dunn making a great save : Ibrahim crossed from the right wing and Ashley Groves met the ball on the volley only to see Dunn tip it over the bar.
Westbury kept up the pace straight after half time as Smith and Groves combined to set up Kovacs but his effort was poor as the ball went across the face of goal. He got in again soon after when more good build up involving Ibrahim led to a low strike from an acute angle which Dunn did well to parry.
Shepton had their chances too, but poor finishing let them down as Francis somehow put the ball several yards wide after doing all the hard work to get in behind United's back line. Ibrahim excelled defensively too, preventing Ward a goalscoring opportunity after the forward had dispossessed Groves. Dycer had a great chance to equalise on 65 when Ward's corner set him up but he headed wide when well placed, Westbury counter attacked and Kovacs took an early shot which flew over the bar.
Still the chances flowed towards the end of the game, but there was to be no other goal : a scramble in Westbury's box was ended when Dan Dominy put the ball out for a corner, then Wheeler broke quickly and crossed to Smith whose volley brought another fine save out of Dunn. The final chance fell to visiting substitute Paul Leatherland but, after showing clever skill and hitting a swerving effort from outside the box, he saw the ball dip just onto the roof of the net.

*STAR MEN - Sayeed Ibrahim (Westbury United) & Owen Dunn (Shepton Mallet)

WHEELER HITS WONDER STRIKE IN WESTBURY WIN
Clevedon United 2-3 Westbury United

Westbury striker Wayne Wheeler scored what will undoubtedly be his team's goal of the season to put them 0-2 ahead in this action packed match at The Hand Stadium. With his side coming under pressure as the hosts searched for an equaliser around the hour mark, Wheeler received the ball 20 yards from goal, took a touch with his left leg and volleyed a right footed screamer into the top corner! It was the sort of moment that would be shown over and over again if scored at the highest level, however it will never be seen again.
On a sunny and windy afternoon the first half was largely scrappy with neither side able to put a good move together. Chances came by way of defensive errors : Clevedon's Greg Andrews and Danny Clarke beating the offside trap and forcing Nick Evans into good saves, while Danny O'Brien in the home goal did well to deny Ashley Groves and Matty Smith.
Westbury took a one goal lead into the break courtesy of a penalty awarded on 27 minutes : Smith lofted the ball into the box where Andy Woodlands climbed all over Dan Kovacs and the spot kick was given, Smith stepped up to score confidently by putting the ball low to O'Brien's right.
There was far more action in the second half : Nathan Hallett put two attempts wide while Andrews set up Pawel Bartnikowski and, with just Evans to beat, he was denied as Westbury's in form keeper made a brave save.
Matt Fisher outpaced Aaron Billett (substitute for the injured Bobby Mitchell) on 59 but as the pair clashed no foul was given and Westbury broke quickly : the ball was played to Wheeler and he unleashed his superb moment of skill and power to double the lead.
Clevedon stepped up the pressure as they searched for a deserved goal : Evans did well twice to deny Bartnikowski and Andrews while Woodlands, given too much space by Westbury's defenders, put a free header wide at a corner. It was Andrews who reduced the arrears for his side on 67 : James Springett played a lovely through ball to Andrews and he ran into the box before putting a classy finish past Evans.
Westbury immediately regained their two-goal advantage in bizarre fashion : Nick Ridout, under pressure on the halfway line, hopefully launched the ball forward and Dan Kovacs jumped to challenge O'Brien in the six yard box with the ball ending up in the net as Kovacs claimed the final touch.
The home side made it 2-3 with seven minutes remaining when a poor back header by Ridout was intercepted by Fisher and he rounded Evans before rolling the ball over the line to set up a tense finish. Westbury managed to hold on to ensure their rise up the table continued.

THREE MORE GOALS AS WESTBURY WIN AGAIN
Minehead Town 0-3 Westbury United

Westbury United have now lost just once in their last eleven matches as they scored three goals for the second consecutive away match. The team followed up a 3-2 win at Clevedon United with an ultimately comfortable victory at bottom side Minehead Town, but the home side played their part with some good football which should have resulted in at least one goal. Wide players Nathan Hallett and Tarick Yachou scored a goal apiece, while left back Pete Ayton had one of his best games for the First Team.
On a sunny afternoon Minehead striker Chris Yeates threatened twice in the first ten minutes : a half volley clipped the crossbar and an effort was deflected wide after good play by Brian Hall.
Westbury had a few half chances before the first goal came on 16 minutes : an excellent move between Dan Kovacs and Wayne Wheeler led to the latter crossing the ball into the box where defender Jack Groves-Furse sliced it into his own net.
With confidence surging Westbury attacked freely : Wheeler had a chip saved by Sam Hutchings, Nathan Hallett's cross-shot was tipped over the bar by Hutchings and the keeper saved again when Ashley Groves latched onto Kovacs' flick and shot towards goal.
Play flowed in the 33rd minute as Groves' cross found Kovacs who saw Hutchings save his header, Minehead broke quickly and Yeates struck the ball straight at Nick Evans. Hallett's wing play caused danger soon after but his work went unrewarded as Wheeler touched the ball wide and Ayton, delivering some accurate set pieces, sent in a great cross that Hallett headed into the side-netting.
An excellent move early in the second half saw Kovacs almost double his side's lead : Nick Ridout's accurate ball found Wheeler who slid it into Kovacs' path but his first time shot went a few feet wide. The deserved second goal came on 50 : Yachou and Sayeed Ibrahim combined on the right wing and Ibrahim's cross to the back post found Hallett who prodded the ball in from six yards.
The points were sewn up on 53 as Minehead went from being within inches of reducing their arrears to being three goals behind : Guy Burns' corner was headed powerfully by Mike Mullen, but Evans made a fine save before launching a counter attack by playing the ball to Wheeler and he set up Yachou who rounded Hutchings before rolling the ball into the net.
More chances followed with an Ayton corner evading everyone, including Hallett's attempt at a header. Hallett then went on a run before fizzing a 20 yarder wide while substitute Mark Young's free kick led to Ridout touching the ball straight to Hutchings.
Minehead pressed forward late on with a series of corners being defended well by Westbury. Their last chance came coutesy of Ridout's awful miskick which allowed Ed Barney a run on goal but, one on one with Evans, he lofted the ball over the bar.

TOOLSTATION LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
Easter Monday 13 April 2009

WHEELER'S SCREAMER CAPS EXCELLENT VICTORY
Westbury United 3-0 Shrewton United

Westbury United turned in an excellent all round performance to defeat Shrewton United in this local derby played on a very warm Spring afternoon. All three goals (the 3rd consecutive match they've scored 3 goals) were different and of the highest quality, capped by another superb strike by Wayne Wheeler!
Chances came at both ends in the opening minutes : visiting skipper Michael Brownless firing over the bar and home captain Lee Morgan having two efforts blocked.
The opening goal was the result of a flowing move on 10 : Nick Ridout switched the ball to Nathan Hallett on the left wing, he outpaced Duncan Smith and sent in a pinpoint cross that was met by Dan Kovacs' bullet header into the top corner.
Shrewton created openings through the pace of Craig Lewis and skill of Dean Foot, however the efforts went wide of goal as well as due to good defending by Pete Ayton. The best chance fell to Foot who found himself one on one with Nick Evans but saw Westbury's keeper stretch to save his clever lob. Then Lewis got in again but this time Dan Dominy deflected the ball away.
Chris Brewer saved from Wheeler, before he was beaten by another fine goal to make it 2-0 on 31 : Ayton sent in a lovely free kick and Ridout jumped to flick a header beyond the Shrewton keeper.
It could have been 3-0 before half time, but Brewer saved well from Wheeler after he'd been set up by Ashley Groves while Ridout threatened at another set piece but saw his effort blocked by Matt Hale.
Foot got into the box early in the second half but the ball was played away from danger, then in another attack Ridout defended strongly to deny Jesse Walters a run at goal. For Westbury, Sayeed Ibrahim combined with Tarick Yachou to set up Kovacs but this time his header went just wide.
After a scrappier spell the game was re-ignited by Wheeler's goal that made it 3-0 : he received the ball inside the box, took a touch with his right foot and spun to send a fierce left footed volley flying past the helpless Brewer!
Further shots came at both ends, all from direct free kicks, but there was to be no addition to the score : Wheeler fired straight at Brewer while Foot and Lewis did likewise for Shrewton.
