I'm going to sticky this topic and lock the previous bypass thread.

Apparantly 3TR announced it at around 10.00, here's a link to the Wiltshire Times article published about an hour ago...

However, White Horse Alliance secretary Patrick Kinnersly was delighted the bypass was refused.

He said: “It’s wonderful news for us. As the inspector said it’s a dead road scheme which would take away valuable countryside for no good reason.

“Now we can get on with the job of working out a way to reduce traffic in our town without losing our landscape, farmland and wildlife we have."

Our Town? Since when has Patrick Kinnersley lived in Westbury? Last time I heard he lived in Hampshire. Just goes to show they can't stop lying even when they have won.

Perhaps we can make a start by not letting him into or through our town anymore. How the hell do you reduce traffic in a town unless you provide a bypass?

However, as the Gov't decided the town did not get enough traffic to justify a bypass, and the traffic coming through Westbury is, presumably, the same amount as uses the Warminster bypass, may I respectfully suggest this one is closed and the land returned to the badgers, bats, dormice and the fairies at the bottom of the garden.

Fairies at the bottom of the garden?  must.....resist........joke!!!
Unlike Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy - you dont HAVE to build bypasses!!
I can think of at least five ways to reduce traffic through the town without building a bypass......

While I agree Westbury needs a bypass, I would have been first up a tree at Wellhead.

1) Better, affordable public transport
2) Toll booths
3) A monorail
4) Repalce the roads with canals
5) Simply pedestrainise the whole of the middle town and let everyone figure everything else out themselves

Another big "Up Yours" ! to Westbury residents, A350 ones in particular.   Puke
Obviously people's air quality and environment doesn't matter...

Well Yarnbrook residents (some of whom were so vociferous against the Westbury bypass)
will now be kissing goodbye to any chance of a Yarnbrook bypass too.  applause

Still if things get too much for me on the A350, perhaps some people over Newtown way will welcome a family of squatters
who would like a bit of tranquility now and then.  Kiss

If you do go up to the woods tonight just mkake sure you dont get knocked over on the A350!!

(If you really cant stand it living on the road, given its been given the thumbs down and that looks pretty long term , if you REALLY cant stand it, maybe its time just to move.  I mean, all of this stress about getting a bypass - is it really worth the stress?   An honest question - not a joke or provocative)

You are absolutely right, I like the town, but yes, after this as soon as I can afford to move I will do.

Westbury Bypass Now ! spent a lot of hours on campaigning for a bypass, we did everything we
could think of, without support or money from large Eco Fascist groups. Yes it was for us personally, and yes we
really believed in our hearts that it would be of benefit to the town and other residents.  So it is a huge kick in the
teeth to see that all our efforts were for nothing.

It was not nice to hear recent rumours that our MP had been 'got at' and had allegedly visited London to lobby against the bypass.
To be honest with all our support coming from ordinary residents we felt like David and Goliath a lot of the time.  Looks like
the odds were against us from the start not having rich and influential friends.

New rules for me now - Westbury NEVER gets anything we always seem to lose it all.
Hospital, Minor Injury Unit, Post Office and now Bypass.  I rest my case.

A bypass that had been held up as the key to getting a ban on lorries trundling through Bath to and from the south coast has been scrapped at the 11th hour.
Campaigners fighting plans for the £40 million Westbury Bypass were celebrating today after the Government decided not to grant planning permission for the road.
Highway chiefs in Wiltshire had already started lining up workers and supplies of gravel to begin work on the controversial road, but Communities Secretary John Denham today threw out the scheme on the advice of a pair of planning inspectors.
His decision will make the long process of finding a way of steering heavy lorry traffic away from the city centre more complicated, with Bath and North East Somerset Council reliant on the building of the bypass to get approval for a weight limit at a spot such as Cleveland Bridge or Warminster Road.
There has long been concern at the impact of the lorries which come through Bath on their way to and from the south coast

So if it had been built hgv traffic would have been routed along the new road!!!!!!!
I never knew that till now!!

Ettie has a really good point that we do seem to lose it all - post office, hospitals etc etc being lost in a town big enough to sustain them -but those examples are things that are universally seen as beneficial to the town.

I don't think the bypass is comparable as if the decision would have been "Yes" there'd be a similar bunch of people up in arms or celebrating.  Noone celebrates the loass of a post office or a hsopital.
