This is a link to a great website provided by the Council with many historical aspects of Westbury and the surrounding area.

Thanks CC

I wonder what historians will record in future history books about the days when we all had access to thriving community hospitals and good health care in Wiltshire.

Very interesting site.  Wiltshire ham was obviously an important commodity in the 11th century, judging by the number of pig men in Westbury in 1086!  Ham and mead were no doubt staple articles of diet.

West Wiltshire District Council's website is generally excellent.  Thanks for pointing out this bit.

Pigs seem to feature strongly in Wiltshire. Swindon was once Swine dun. Named by the Saxons meaning Swine Town.

There were six pubs in Westbury Leigh alone.  The Phipps Arms closed shortly after I moved into the area, leaving just the Hollies.  A shame.

There was also a W H Smiths in Warminster Road (which looks much nicer in old photos than it does now).  I believe Smiths closed in the 1960s.

Nice idea, but "ham" in that context means "home", or "settlement".  Nothing to do with pigs!

There was a fine War Memorial in the Market Place.  It was removed to make more car parking spaces... a shame.  Then there was a Russian cannon, captured in the Crimean War.  I think that went for scrap in World War Two.

Here is my contribution to the documentation of our history – www.thisiswestbury.co.uk as with most history presentations, much of it has been gleaned from other sources so mostly what I’ve done is collate the available information, then give it to you with pretty words and pictures. I was amazed at just how much I never knew I didn’t know about our home town until I started to research it!!!
