As usual I cannot post a link, but do you know which story I refer to?
It makes my blood boil.
Yes I understand that he is alone in a three bed home, and the Council want it back for needy families, but I am sickened to read his story in the paper, that his home of 75 years is to be taken from him.
His garden is all neatly done out in rows of fruit and veg and that is his hobby/focus/pride and joy.......
I know there are people on waiting lists, but I pity this man and wish they would leave him alone to see out his days in his family home surrounded by memories and familiarities.

No one should ever be forced out of social housing, especially when they are in their 80s and have lived there most of their lives.
The poor man, it will finish him off probably, I know that passed on tenancies are a bit dodgy, but in this case he should be left to live out his last few years in the home that he has always had.
If I was on the waiting list, I would not expect him to get out of his home for me, I waited on the list for years, homeless a lot of the time, pushed from pillar to post, in seedy B&Bs and tempaccomodation, but never once did I expect anyone to leave their home for me. Everyone on the list has to wait, and work their way up through the system.

I agree Monica, I would never want a home knowing some elderly man had been turfed out for us.

So, CC, would you stay, with your children, in a temporary B&B moving from pillar to post so he can stay in his big 3 bed house on his own? Its a 3 bed house. You'd get a homeless family into a 3 bed house - give the kids a good start in life. In practical terms its a no brainer.

So, CC, who are you angry with about this? The council's job is to do things in the most practical and sensible way. Add emotions too it and it gets very complicated!!!

I think, and I will stand by this, that it is dispicable to turf an elderly man out of his home of so many years, where he has memories, where he is familiar with all around him, where he has put so much time and energy into his home.
A move could kill him. It is too much for him. Leave him be.

I agree with you, he should be left alone. But real life is hard choices - and your "leaving him be" could very well be forcing a family out onto the street (effectively). But thats the decision you would make, yes?

Well, no, in an ideal world, they would be kept in sufficient accommodation, and he would be left alone.
I cannot see that a Council would turf any family out on the street, but they would keep them in often inadequate accommodation.
Having worked with the elderly, and seeing how vulnerable they can be, and how any change in routine can often be at great detriment to them, I am just disgusted that this man is being put in this position.

Having kids is a good option if you need your accommodation to be provided for you, yes. That's a big factor in why there are far more homeless men than women.
Thing is the old man will be moved somewhere with warmth, shelter, a roof over his head - that would be adequate. Whether it meets his emotional needs is a different matter, but not one for the council to consider.

Having never come across this situation before and I would love to read the story ! I know that the Housing associations in Wiltshire work very hard and that there probably is a great deal of one resident in a say 3 bedroomed home, Here they do not force people out of their homes like this scenario , But in a lot of cases one person dies and the tenancy is in the deceased persons name leaving kindred alone in a very oversized home for their needs , and other suitable correct sized property is offered , to make avaliable the house for people needy on the waiting lists. I can not believe this person has not been offered alternative accomadation , to suit their current needs. Sadly it is a fact of life . This I have never come across within Wiltshire I hasten to add.
