JANUARY was the busiest month in Westbury and District Link Scheme's 10-year history, latest figures reveal.

Its team of volunteers drivers drove 3,400 miles during the month, carrying out 170 tasks, taking elderly and disabled people and others without transport to doctors' and hospital appointments and to the shops.

Phil Jefferson, chairman of the scheme's management committee, praised the the scheme's volunteers.

"Our drivers were very busy right through the month but even so there were only three occasions when we couldn't find a driver to help out," he said.

"We are so pleased that we are meeting a real need in the Westbury community. Although we provide a free service, we do depend on the donations given by our clients to meet the cost of our expenses and last month our clients showed by their generosity how much they value what we do. We thank them warmly for that."

Westbury Link always has a need to recruit new volunteers to help with driving, answering the telephone and serving on the management committee.

Anyone living in the Westbury area who wants to find out more about Link should contact the helpline on 01373 859669. Lines are open weekday mornings between 9am and 1pm.
